Definition:

Use of stems cells for the development, either in vivo or in vitro, for subsequent transplantation, of functional cell, tissue or organ substitutes to repair or replace those damaged by abnormalities, aging, disease or injury.

An important goal of stem cell research is to determine how pluripotent cells differentiate into specific tissues or divide and grow into fully-formed organs.
