History was made today when the USA passed a Health Care Bill, giving millions of Americans medical coverage they otherwise could not afford. Not only that, but the bill ensures that those with pre-existing medical conditions (heart disease, cancer etc.) will not be denied coverage. The vote in favour of passing the bill depended on an agreement to address the bioethics issue of abortion to the satisfaction of a number of strong opponents. Passing of the bill is expected to have a positive effect on the biotech industry, and is welcomed by those investing in biotech stocks. While many pharmaceutical company, and medical device-maker stocks rose in value upon the announcement, medical insurance company shares fell.
