Interactive Website: Biotech in Space

Thursday October 30, 2008

I just found this really cool site funded by the Government of Canada, where you participate in an interactive online "adventure" trip to Mars. The site is designed to teach you about various biotech applications while also relating them what we think life would be like in space. Choose your own team of scientists from the dossier of resumes and solve problems using biotech research in space. Examples of what you might see are new approaches to treat cancer, improved production of biofuels, extraction of copper from rock using bacteria, growing GMOs and more. In fact, many of the agricultural biotech applications being used on earth now are applicable to future life in outer space. The site fun to show your kids, or just play the games yourself! I started with the task of treating leukemia caused by too much exposure to radiation and got to fight nasty bacteria with antibiotics and blast cancerous cells with my space-age rocket!
