Will Biotech Stocks Survive?

Monday September 15, 2008

With today's catastrophic falls in the USA affecting the stock markets around the world, biotech startups, venture investors and others who are interested in investing in biotech are likely wondering how this affects them. Experts are comparing today's events to the crash of 1929 but, still, the fallout of the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy is unprecedented, so no one really knows just what will happen.

Most stock markets are bracing for a huge sell-off today, while many Asian markets are closed for holidays. Choosing biotechnology stock is already considered risky on a good day, because it is a very volatile market, but what we have going for us is that prices of houses, gold or the US dollar don’t change the fact that we have an aging population in North America and there will always be demand for biomedical research. That said, a quick look at the leading biotech stocks on CNN Money indicates prices are dropping across the board.
