Microbial Genome Program Advances Biotechnology Research
The U.S. Department of Energy Microbial Genome Program was founded in 1994 to investigate the vast diversity of microorganisms on this planet, with the intent to discover potential new applications for the biotechnology and biomedical industries. Genomes of microorganisms with unique abilities to thrive in extreme environments, or degrade highly recalcitrant chemicals, are being sequenced and studied. It is hoped that the information will lead to new solutions to environmental and medical problems facing humans today. Some possible applications include remediation of toxic wastes, and development of novel drugs, energy sources, catalysts and biosensors. Information on this project and links to related microbial genome databases, can be found on the DOE website.
