Biotechnology Job Expectations

Monday May 14, 2007

Anyone considering a career in biotechnology might wonder just what type of education is required for what types of jobs and what responsibilities might come with each different position. Finding this information for free is easy using any of the various popular job search engines.

If you’ve already finished your education and have a good idea of what kind of job you want, you probably already know the importance of doing background research on companies of interest. This will help you in two ways: First, it gives you an idea of what the company is like, what they do, and whether you would like to work there. Secondly, research is an important part of being prepared for an interview with that company.

For added signup fees, employee surveys for over 50 employers in the biotechnology industry can be found at Vault.com. Although it might be worth the fee (for a short term), to read real-life reviews of what it’s like to work for certain well-known biotechnology companies, I would be cautious as there are sure to be some extremely critical accounts by ex-employees with a personal vendetta. Likewise, management might counter with falsely positive glowing reports.

My advice is to definitely do your research and review the company to get a feel for its size, policies, and objectives. Certainly do what you can to get information about the working atmosphere from current employees. For the most reliable reviews, however, don't ask them on the spot while you're there for an interview. Collect their business cards and call them individually afterwards, and you're sure to get a more honest response.
